Devil Fruits are mystical fruits found in the world of One Piece that bestow upon the eater a strange and unique ability, depending on the type and variation of the fruit. It is said that each Devil Fruit is one of a kind and that only one of each fruit is in use at any given time. This can further be explained by the observation that when a Devil Fruit user dies, the ability is reborn in another fruit of the same kind. It is also widely known that you may only have one Devil Fruit power at any given time. Those who attempt to eat two or more fruits are killed within seconds, their bodies being destroyed by the devil spirits who are believed to dwell within the fruits that they consume. While Devil Fruit users may have their individual flaws or weaknesses, all Devil Fruit users share the following two weaknesses. The first is that those who gain their power will never be able to swim again. Submerging themselves in water saps them of all their strength and causes them to sink like a stone. The second weakness is that Seastone, a naturally occurring substance — apparently rare — that gives off the same energy signature as the sea, can completely drain their strength, leaving them immobilized while they maintain physical contact with it. It also disable their Devil Fruit abilities, allowing them to be injured like normal, especially if the Seastone can be made into a weapon. There are three known types of Devil Fruit:
- The Paramecia type of Devil Fruit is really difficult to generalize because they are very different from one another. Some can affect the body in utterly strange ways, manipulate the surrounding environment, or maybe produce substances. For the most part, Paramecia type Devil Fruits give their users powers other than transforming into a force of nature, like the Logia-type, or transforming into an animal, like the Zoan-type.
- The Logia type of Devil Fruit is characterized by giving its user the ability to turn into a natural element or force of nature. Because of this ability, Logia type users are practically invulnerable to attacks. They could, quite literally, be beaten into dust, separated into multiple parts, or shattered into a million pieces, and reform without injury. Many Logia can be countered with their natural weaknesses such as smoke being vulnerable to strong gusts of wind. They can also be countered by the use of seastone.
- The Zoan type of Devil Fruit is chracterized by giving its user the ability to transform in another species or an inter-species hybrid form. However, through training, it is possible for Zoan type users to accomplish greater feats. For instance, being able to transform individual parts of the body in or transforming into several different forms through the use of a Rumble Ball.
